As you can see I started the facade, I decided to go with a traditional facade.... of course that in here it doesn't look so traditional but thats how they do a lot forest cabins, and since this would be in a forest (in theory) It seemed appropriate.

Got a lot of work ahead of me... I even plan on making the furniture for it :p

PS: I know the photos suck.. dont worry its just a progress update.. i´ll make sure to do them right when i finish the whole thing :p

Bat House With Slate Exterior

House Design

Here is the plan for a bat house that I designed. I built two of them and placed them at a nearby wildlife refuge (with the blessing of the refuge manager).

Design features:

- The top and front are made from slate floor tiles ( each at Home Depot). There are several reasons for using slate (vs. wood):
- It requires no maintenance (painting). It is already the right color for our area (dark) and does not need paint for weather protection.
- It warms quickly in sunlight, warming the house in the morning.
- It provides thermal mass, holding heat into the night.

- The landing pad is covered with a flattened piece of bark. Bark looks natural, and provides the roughness that the bats need for landing. After gluing the bark to the landing pad, I gave it several coats of exterior varnish to make it last longer.

- The design incorporates two ventilation features:
- A vent between the two front slates. This allows for some air circulation which the bats need on hot days. This is a fairly standard feature in recent bat house designs.
- A vent just under the slate roof. Air is drawn through a small gap between the rigid insulation and the upper front slate, and exits through five screened holes drilled in the back, very near the top of the house. This allows some air flow at the front crevice, even at the top of the crevice, and at the bottom of the nursery area. It also allows air flow under the roof slate, mimicking a slate roof. I am not an expert on slate roofs but I know most roof undersides need to allow for airflow to avoid water condensation on the underside of the roof.

- Some of the partitions are slanted because there is some research in our area showing that our bat species prefer a wedge-shape instead of an entirely vertical partition.

- The rigid insulation holds heat in the house from below, and reduces heat coming down from the roof on sunny days. This makes the bat house temperature more stable, and warmer at night, which most bats prefer.

- The design includes an "attic nursery", designed to meet the needs of mother bats with newborns. The mothers and pups like a temperature of around 90-100 degrees. The sloped attic floor should be a litte more forgiving for clumsy infants, vs. a vertical surface which if they lose their grip would drop them to the ground where they would be helpless and die. The down side of a non-vertical surface is that guano may accumulate here. But it does have some slope and guano is light, so most of it should get knocked out and fall to the ground. But we'll have to see what happens.

- I glued rough material (bark in one house, sisal rope in the other) to the roof of the attic so the bats could hang from the ceiling of the nursery area. The rope turned out to be a bad idea, though I did eventually get it to work. A piece of pet netting would work fine.

- I opted to extend one partition below the bottom of the house. This was mainly due to the dimensions of the wainscoting (which is 3.5" wide) - I did not want to have to rip any of it. But I also wanted to see if the bats would use this partition for landing and taking off.

- I melted wax onto the entire outer wood surfaces, for the following reasons:
- No maintenance. Wax never needs to be painted. The wax will dry out eventually, but that will take at least 15 years I would guess.
- As it weathers, the wax darkens the wood, to the color that is appropriate for our climate.
- The weathered wax finish will blend in well with the dead trees upon which the houses are mounted.
- On really hot days the wax melts, flowing into every little crack and knot in the wood. Any excess wax just drips off.
- Most waterproofing finishes are a form of dissolved wax, so when you put a waterproofer on your deck you are really just putting down mainly dissolved wax. I have experimented with melting wax directly into cedar, and have had good results (though it is very labor intensive). To get the same amount of wax into the wood with a waterproofing seal, I would have to put on many, many coats. Also this wax would not reflow on hot days, and waterproofer really only lasts about a year.

The total material cost for this house is a little over . The only special tool required was a tile saw to cut 45 degree bevels on the slates, but those are not completely necessary.

If I build more of these I think I will flatten the slope of the roof a bit so I can fit in one more partition. The front partition gap is a little bigger than I like (1.15").

Neon Trees

Any conversation with Neon Trees' Tyler Glenn is likely to be heavy on the word "fascinated." He's fascinated by pop culture, the talent of his band mates, authenticity in an inauthentic world and the power of imagination. The fact that Tyler writes killer songs isn't any kind of news. "Animal," from Neon Trees 2010 debut, Habits, was a double-platinum single. A wide ranging group of artists from Taylor Swift to Train to upcoming pop boys The Wanted have all covered the song, it was named the Top Alternative Song of 2011 by Billboard, and it even showed up on a Glee episode. As #1 hit, "Animal" was practically everywhere. The two other singles from Habits, "1983" and "Surrender," were nearly as huge. So "Habits" was indeed a success, but it wasn't the kind of success Neon Trees originally had had in mind. "When we made the last record, we tried to endear ourselves to the blogosphere," Tyler says. "We took these fantastic songs and we produced them in a way that we thought would attract the critics and the hip kids, and that's not what happened. Instead, we ended up being embraced by a completely different crowd of people – people who like us because we're entertaining. We played a show not long after the record came out, and afterwards a fan thanked me for making music fun again. That's much cooler than a five-star review in Pitchfork." The music may be full-on fun, but the lyrics? In addition to other less-than-trifling topics, Tyler writes about longing, masochism, vanity, the reality of reality, and the politics of gender. "I love juxtaposition," Tyler explains. "I love to wrap heavy themes in effervescence. When we started working on Picture Show I discovered I'd become fearless," Tyler continues ... "I love who our audience is; we don't need to be anything other than who we are. That was an incredible realization. It freed us up. We're unconstrained. We're bolder." "Picture Show", which will be released in April, was produced by Justin Meldal-Johnson, who's worked with Nine Inch Nails, Beck, and M83, amongst others. "It was a great experience. We really connected," Tyler says. "Justin's from the same world, musically. I'd be talking about the feeling of a Teenage Fanclub song that came out in 1992 or a moment in a Pulp song and he'd know exactly what I meant." Neon Trees have SoCal roots, but the band came together eight years ago when Tyler and his neighbor, guitarist Chris Allen, relocated to Provo, Utah, and hooked up with Elaine Bradley (drums) and bassist Branden Campbell. They still live in Provo, although Tyler describes Neon Trees as "citizens of the world." They've been traveling so much that home has become a foreign concept. In addition to doing time in New York and Los Angeles, Neon Trees have done more than 220 shows in the United States, Europe, Canada, and the UK. They've supported shows and tours with the Killers, My Chemical Romance, 30 Seconds to Mars, and, most recently, Neon Trees did an arena tour with Duran Duran. They've also performed on Jimmy Kimmel, Conan, Letterman and Leno. Tyler sums up Neon Trees best by saying, "There's an idea that rock and roll is about debauchery and drugs but that's not the spirit of rock and roll. That's acting rock and roll. That's lifestyle. The spirit of rock and roll is in the music, the emotional weight of the melodies and lyrics, the show and the performance, and with all of that, Neon Trees is rock and roll."

Designing For Monuments And Memorials

San Diego, Calif. August 08, 2012

The 2012 edition of Cartouche, a student publication of NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD), highlights the role of designers and architects in creating memorials, with a special focus on the Oklahoma City National Memorial and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania.

Samantha Winland, a student in the Master of Architecture program at NSAD, wrote the memorial-themed stories for Cartouche based on interviews with Paul Murdoch of Paul Murdoch Architects, designer of the Flight 93 National Memorial, and Hans and Torrey Butzer of Butzer Gardner Architects, designers of the Oklahoma City National Memorial. The Flight 93 memorial commemorates those who lost their lives on one of the planes commandeered by terrorists in the 9/11 attacks. The Oklahoma City memorial honors those lost in the 1995 terrorist bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.

The articles in this edition of Cartouche explore the importance of community input on sensitive projects and evaluate how design can contribute to the healing process. For example, Oklahoma City residents did not want the city to tear down a fence where mementos and tributes to the victims had been placed. As a result, the fence was incorporated into the overall design of the memorial.

Cartouche is a forum for the expression of ideas and a showcase for the talents of NSAD students, faculty members, and the broader San Diego community. The Cartouche faculty advisor is Joe C. Nicholson, who also brings his expertise in memorial design to this year?s publication. Nicholson and 1999 NSAD alumna Shari Grant were among six finalists in the international competition to design the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The new edition of Cartouche also includes articles about the NSAD Alumni Mentorship Program, as well as highlights from two of this year?s NSAD guest lecturers: Robert Ivy, the executive vice president/chief executive officer of the American Institute of Architects and Joshua Prince-Ramus, of REX Architecture. NSAD alumnus Soeren Wegener wrote an article on the Sustainable North Park Main Street project in the San Diego community of North Park. The two-year project involved seven 2010 NSAD graduates, including Wegener, who contributed to the development of a sustainable planning initiative in collaboration with architecture and design professionals.

Cartouche is available online at https://www.newschoolarch.edu/cartouche.htm.

Hip Hotels: Orient

Sublime landscapes, rich cultures, ancient traditions, and startling modernity: Hip Hotels Orient promises to be Herbert Ypma's most exciting book to date. The Orient has held sway over the Western imagination since the days of Marco Polo and Genghis Khan. And that remains true in the twenty-first century, even if the world to the east of the Mediterranean is today a very different place, where potent symbols of age-old cultures—minarets, bazaars, Buddhist monks in saffron robes—exist alongside bold expressions of modernity and futuristic style. These are some of the most extraordinary Hip Hotels yet. Live like a maharaja—with a maharaja—in the Umed Bhawan Palace in Rajasthan, a splendid art deco fantasy designed between 1929 and 1932. This enormous palace, bigger than Washington's Capitol Building, is still home to the former Crown Prince and his family. Or stay in a guest villa of King Sihanouk, now the setting for Cambodia's sophisticated new Aman hotel, which is the perfect place to unwind after days spent exploring the incredible temples of nearby Angkor. In the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, the hotly anticipated hilltop hotel by the team behind London's Metropolitan promises a fusion of sleek contemporary style with the vivid detailing of one of the last pristine mountain cultures on the planet. One of the most remarkable projects here is the Commune by the Great Wall, a highly innovative development by an all-star cast of Asian design talent in a stunning location beside China's most famous ancient monument. Or visit Benesse House on the remote Japanese island of Naoshima, a Zen-like retreat dedicated to the display of contemporaryart. Designed by Tadao Ando, an architect renowned for his pared-down places of worship, it is an intensely spiritual destination that has become a site of modern pilgrimage. 500 illustrations, 350 in color.

stay out of the mainstream area;
that is, listing houses for sale.

become an exclusive buyer's agent.
Rep middle income and upper income
black women as a niche.

Also poke into doing commercial
and industrial purchases.

and maybe business brokerage

plus, interview different agencies--
most are Realtor focused; which
means they take listings. YOU can
choose not to do that via being
an exclusive BUYER's agent.
[they don't sell RE--they help
buyers buy, and that is a different
approach].

plus u can find those offices that
have 100% approaches [where
the agent pays for desk space and
does not split the commission.]

available to help -though I am not
in TN.

Take your real estate classes but also take a basic accounting course, real estate law, any finance course and a course in public speaking. Don't laugh, you will use all those courses through your career. Also start talking to various brokers and let them know you are taking classes. Whether taking college courses along with taking real estate classes from various real estate companies or independent real estate schools be aware of the market you are in. Also talk to lenders so you know some of what is needed for your buyers. Please learn about Title & Escrow as well. Once you hang your license make sure you become a Buyers agent first not a Sellers agent. When you start with buyers you will be learning along with your buyers some of the issues that can come up in a transaction. If you start on the Sellers side you will be on the losing end of every transaction as most seasoned agents know who is new, knows the contingencies that will let them get out of the contract and you will be left standing holding the bag.
