Designing For Monuments And Memorials

San Diego, Calif. August 08, 2012

The 2012 edition of Cartouche, a student publication of NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD), highlights the role of designers and architects in creating memorials, with a special focus on the Oklahoma City National Memorial and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania.

Samantha Winland, a student in the Master of Architecture program at NSAD, wrote the memorial-themed stories for Cartouche based on interviews with Paul Murdoch of Paul Murdoch Architects, designer of the Flight 93 National Memorial, and Hans and Torrey Butzer of Butzer Gardner Architects, designers of the Oklahoma City National Memorial. The Flight 93 memorial commemorates those who lost their lives on one of the planes commandeered by terrorists in the 9/11 attacks. The Oklahoma City memorial honors those lost in the 1995 terrorist bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.

The articles in this edition of Cartouche explore the importance of community input on sensitive projects and evaluate how design can contribute to the healing process. For example, Oklahoma City residents did not want the city to tear down a fence where mementos and tributes to the victims had been placed. As a result, the fence was incorporated into the overall design of the memorial.

Cartouche is a forum for the expression of ideas and a showcase for the talents of NSAD students, faculty members, and the broader San Diego community. The Cartouche faculty advisor is Joe C. Nicholson, who also brings his expertise in memorial design to this year?s publication. Nicholson and 1999 NSAD alumna Shari Grant were among six finalists in the international competition to design the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The new edition of Cartouche also includes articles about the NSAD Alumni Mentorship Program, as well as highlights from two of this year?s NSAD guest lecturers: Robert Ivy, the executive vice president/chief executive officer of the American Institute of Architects and Joshua Prince-Ramus, of REX Architecture. NSAD alumnus Soeren Wegener wrote an article on the Sustainable North Park Main Street project in the San Diego community of North Park. The two-year project involved seven 2010 NSAD graduates, including Wegener, who contributed to the development of a sustainable planning initiative in collaboration with architecture and design professionals.

Hip Hotels: Orient

Sublime landscapes, rich cultures, ancient traditions, and startling modernity: Hip Hotels Orient promises to be Herbert Ypma's most exciting book to date. The Orient has held sway over the Western imagination since the days of Marco Polo and Genghis Khan. And that remains true in the twenty-first century, even if the world to the east of the Mediterranean is today a very different place, where potent symbols of age-old cultures—minarets, bazaars, Buddhist monks in saffron robes—exist alongside bold expressions of modernity and futuristic style. These are some of the most extraordinary Hip Hotels yet. Live like a maharaja—with a maharaja—in the Umed Bhawan Palace in Rajasthan, a splendid art deco fantasy designed between 1929 and 1932. This enormous palace, bigger than Washington's Capitol Building, is still home to the former Crown Prince and his family. Or stay in a guest villa of King Sihanouk, now the setting for Cambodia's sophisticated new Aman hotel, which is the perfect place to unwind after days spent exploring the incredible temples of nearby Angkor. In the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, the hotly anticipated hilltop hotel by the team behind London's Metropolitan promises a fusion of sleek contemporary style with the vivid detailing of one of the last pristine mountain cultures on the planet. One of the most remarkable projects here is the Commune by the Great Wall, a highly innovative development by an all-star cast of Asian design talent in a stunning location beside China's most famous ancient monument. Or visit Benesse House on the remote Japanese island of Naoshima, a Zen-like retreat dedicated to the display of contemporaryart. Designed by Tadao Ando, an architect renowned for his pared-down places of worship, it is an intensely spiritual destination that has become a site of modern pilgrimage. 500 illustrations, 350 in color.

Steps To Becoming An Architect

steps to becoming an architect in washington?
by oscarhwang2239

i'm 15 years old and i'm planning to be an architect in the state of washington.
so i need to know:
what classes i should take in high school
what university is good for becoming an architect(in state or out state)
what degree i should have(bach., masters, etc.)
how much my income will be in washington?

the general question is: what should i do to become an architect in washington state, help.

Answer(s):

Answer by chilena12
Pretty much the same thing to be an architect anywhere!

"While still in high school, you should plan a strong college preparatory program with courses in English, humanities subjects, mathematics, including geometry, trigonometry, algebra, and pre-calculus, and physics.

Art courses - drawing, painting, sculpture, or photography - will be helpful in developing your ability to visualize and conceptualize, both important skills to an architect.

Elective courses in computers and business will be extremely helpful in preparing for a career in architecture. "

"As an architecture student, you will study a broad range of subjects, including writing, design, graphics, computer applications, art history, mathematics, physics, structural systems, and building and materials construction.

To get an idea of the specific classes you will take, spend some time browsing through the course listings of colleges that have been accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Here's a sampling of classes offered by several architecture schools:

Parsons School of Design - Graduate Program
Penn State College of Arts and Architecture
University of Texas at Austin
University of Louisana at Lafayette
Ball State University "

Salary between 40-60K starting out.

Hammes Company Spearheads Cah Expansion

Brookfield, Wisc. August 07, 2012

Providing quality healthcare in technologically advanced, energy-efficient, patient-friendly surroundings is often a challenge. But that challenge is compounded in today?s uncertain times ? especially in the small, rural communities of the geographically remote, 18-county region of northern Virginia and northeastern West Virginia known as the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

But thanks to the recent collaboration between Valley Health and its project management partner, Brookfield, Wis.-based Hammes Company, access to convenient, top-quality healthcare is becoming more and more of a reality for the area.

The Winchester, Va.-based non-profit health system chose Hammes Company, the nation?s largest healthcare real estate developer, as its owner?s representative and project manager to help build three new critical access hospital (CAH) projects. Two of the CAH hospitals recently opened and the third is set to open in the first quarter of 2014. The projects are:

? War Memorial Hospital, a two-story, 87,000 square foot facility on 80.5 acres at 1 Healthy Way, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.;

? Hampshire Memorial Hospital, a two-and-a-half story, 88,000 square-foot facility on 49.5 acres at 363 Sunrise Blvd. in Romney, W.Va.; and

? Page Memorial Hospital, a two-story, 67,000 square-foot replacement facility on 15.3 acres at 200 Memorial Dr., Luray, Va.

?These three new facilities help to further Valley Health?s mission to bring quality healthcare to our patients in their own communities,? says Neil McLaughlin, President of both War Memorial and Hampshire Memorial Hospitals. ?Partnering with Hammes Company has brought a new level of leadership and innovation that has energized these projects and in turn, the patients they serve and staff who work in them. All three are sure to be major assets to the Northern Shenandoah Valley region for years to come.?

?To have three brand new, technologically advanced, environmentally efficient, patient- and staff-friendly hospitals in these particular communities might have been deemed impossible at one time,? adds Mark Baker, Valley Health Corporate Director of Construction Services & Project Management. ?Working with Hammes Company has helped us achieve an invaluable asset for the residents of Morgan, Hampshire and Page counties.?

All three hospitals carry the CAH designation, which makes them eligible for special payments under Medicare. To qualify for this federal designation, a hospital must be located in a rural area, have no more than 25 inpatient beds, provide 24-hour emergency services, have an average length-of-stay for its patients of 96 hours or less, be located more than 35 miles (or more than 15 miles in areas with mountainous terrain) from the nearest hospital ? or be designated as a ?necessary provider? by its state.

In addition, all three facilities have been built to meet important sustainability, operational and design standards. The three hospitals incorporate such green features as a roofing system that leads to energy conservation and environmentally efficient mechanical and electrical systems. There are also extensive daylighting features that have been created using environmentally enhanced windows, providing healing exterior views.

?Hammes Company has been able to deliver effective and strategic project management expertise to Valley Health on these three critical access hospital projects. We are delighted with the results and the difference the facilities are making to their communities,? says Matthew J. Hufnagle, a Vice President with Hammes Company. ?Providing top quality, energy-efficient and life-saving healthcare to people who need it most is not only part of our strategy, it?s the right thing to do.?

The architect for all three hospitals is the Washington, D.C., office of Perkins+Will. The general contractor on War Memorial Hospital and Hampshire Memorial Hospital is Howard Shockey and Sons of Winchester, Va. Page Memorial Hospital is currently undergoing the bidding process for its project teams.

?We owe much to these firms for their major contributions on the success of these projects. Without them, these hospitals would not have been possible,? adds Mr. Hufnagle.

The Girl In The

The Girl in the Green Glass Mirror

Hailed for her “remarkably accomplished and poignant work” (Washington Post), acclaimed author Elizabeth McGregor returns with a haunting love story about two lost souls brought together by chance—and bonded forever by a mystery that transcends madness, tragedy, and time itself....Catherine Sergeant is adept at going through the motions. After losing her parents at an early age, she buried her grief in the study of antiquities. Now, deserted by her husband without warning or explanation, she reports to work at Pearson’s auction house, exchanging pleasantries with colleagues, never revealing her pain. Cocooned in loneliness, she couldn’t be more surprised to find herself opening up to a total stranger—a new client, no less. In widowed architect John Brigham, Catherine finds a kindred spirit. The two share a fascination with Richard Dadd, an early Victorian painter who lived most of his life incarcerated in an insane asylum. There he produced his most stunning works—works that have deeply moved Catherine and now draw her inexorably to John. Soon the two are falling in love. The reawakening of passion in a woman like Catherine is more than John ever hoped for. But when she discovers his possession of an unknown Dadd, it is just the first in a series of revelations that leave her wondering if she knows this man who has shown her life’s true beauty. For John, it may be a last chance to free himself from the priceless secrets he has been harboring too long. Secrets about a soul laid bare on canvas, and a legacy that could shatter all he holds dear in the space of a heartbeat…A compelling blend of human drama, art, and history, this intriguing tale casts a spell that lingers far beyond the final page—and celebrates the strength we all must find within our hearts. From the Hardcover edition.

Greenwich Village Walking Tour

Event on 2012-08-04 10:00:00

*Receive a 10% discount by mentioning EVENTFUL when booking.

Greenwich Village has always been a place apart from the rest of New York. Not only does the city's grid find exception here; but the residents of this hamlet within the city have always defined themselves by their own sense of community. During this three-hour walking seminar of Greenwich Village we will explore the history of enigmatic neighborhood, from its Native American roots, through the Dutch tobacco farms and the English estates of "Green Wich," to the Bohemian emergence of Greenwich Village.

In the company of an urban historian, this walk will focus on the early history of the Village, though certain detours and tangents will bring us in to contact with the 20th and 21st centuries. We'll explore the early settlements and trace the topography of old rivers; we'll consider the human scale of the buildings and winding streets. In order to introduce the Village's many layers, we begin at its nexus: Washington Square, a former potter's field, then fashionable park, and now busy hangout. We'll look into the cobblestoned mews and nineteenth-century carriage houses that are tucked behind the mansions along the park, some of the few that remain in the entire city.

Context Travel is an in-depth alternative to traditional tours. We are a network of architects, historians, art historians, and specialists who organize over 300 different walks in 12 cities around the world.

George Washington Smith Architect Of

George Washington Smith: Architect of the Spanish-Colonial Revival

Massive white stucco walls, rolling red-tile roofs, dark wrought-iron window grilles, and lush vegetation are hallmarks of George Washington Smith's work and have come to represent the essence of Southern California architecture. Author Patricia Gebhard accessed the notes of her late husband, architectural historian David Gebhard (author of An Architectural Guide to Los Angeles), and continued researching the archives at the Architecture and Design Collection of the Art Museum at the University

Robert R. Taylor and Tuskegee: An African American Architect Designs for Booker T. Washington

Robert R. Taylor and Tuskegee interweaves the life of the first academically trained African American architect with his life's work - the campus of Booker T. Washington's Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute. In this richly illustrated architectural history, the author shows how a black youth born in North Carolina shortly after the Civil War earned a professional architecture degree at MIT and how he then used his design and administrative skills to further Booker T. Washington's agenda of

The Architect

The Architect

President George W. Bush dubbed Karl Rove “The Architect” for his skill in creating an unprecedented campaign and fund-raising machine. But Rove’s ambitions have always been far more sweeping—to build a right-wing dynasty that can dominate American politics for decades. Rove’s master plan imagines a political system so controlled by Republicans that it is resisted only by symbolic opposition. In The Architect , James Moore and Wayne Slater, the bestselling authors of Bush’s Brain , return with an even more penetrating examination of Rove, his sweeping agenda, and the price he may have to pay for his audacity. Drawing on their decades-long study of Rove, they provide a rarely seen view of the politics of absolute power in Washington—how it is acquired, expanded, and turned to startling ends. Specifically, they unveil how Rove: • Used lobbyist Jack Abramoff as a cat’s-paw to manage unruly legislators • Energetically led the antigay marriage movement while protecting a family secret that made his stance bizarrely cynical • Turned Christian churches into a gigantic vote delivery system, despite privately admitting to being a nonbeliever • Repeatedly leaked information to harm political opponents, making him the man investigators most wanted to talk to when they began probing the Plame affair • Was intimately involved in an international disinformation scheme to lead America to war The Architect is an eye-opening and frequently shocking report on the maneuverings of a brilliant but morally ambiguous political strategist, and the first-ever in-depth look at a political operative striving to absolutely control the future—even if he risks losing everything. Also available as an eBook From the Hardcover edition.
